Low moisture cleaning and encapsulation methods are the answer. It should be treated with the same care as everything else.

Be aware that mistakes can be made depending on whether the objective is to maintain, clean the surface or thoroughly deep-clean the carpet. The disadvantages of low moisture cleaning or encapsulation are that the chemicals used over time can degrade the carpet. This process involves spraying the chemical into the carpet, and waiting until it crystallizes or “encapsulates” the soil. This method is less water-intensive than other carpet cleaning methods, such as the hot water extraction.

If time is an issue, this isn’t the process for you. It takes nearly 24 hours to dry the chemicals and encapsulate the product. The crystals will then be easily removed by vacuuming.
